Millet Types and Forms

Proso, foxtail, pearl, and finger millet are four distinct species that differ in seed size, color, and harvest window.

  • Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum) is the dominant species in North American and European supply and offers the smallest seed size and shortest growing cycle.
  • Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is sourced primarily from West Africa and India and delivers higher protein content than proso.
  • Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is common in Chinese supply and has a yellow to golden seed color.
  • Finger millet (Eleusine coracana) is used in African and South Asian markets and contains higher calcium levels than other species.

Buyers must specify species and form at the RFQ stage.

  • Whole grain millet is sold hulled and requires triple-cleaning to remove stones and weed seeds that damage milling equipment.
  • Flour, flakes, and puffed formats are processed from dehusked grain and are sold by purity grade (99.9%+ for food manufacturing).
  • Groats are dehusked kernels suitable for porridge and grain bowls.
  • Semolina is a coarse grind used in gluten-free pasta formulations. Suppliers remove the outer bran layer during dehusking and sell it separately for fiber supplementation.

Millet Origin and Supply

India produces over 12 million metric tons of millet annually, accounting for the largest share of global supply. China supplies foxtail millet for domestic consumption and export to East Asian markets, with production concentrated in the northern provinces. Nigeria and Mali are secondary African sources where millet is traded regionally and exported to European gluten-free ingredient buyers. USA production focuses on proso millet and targets certified organic and non-GMO supply chains for North American and European buyers.

Bulk Millet

Millet absorbs moisture rapidly in humid storage conditions and must be stored at 13% moisture content or lower to prevent spoilage and pest damage. Suppliers ship in 25kg kraft paper bags. Buyers sourcing ancient grains for gluten-free formulations may also consider amaranth as a complementary ingredient.

Organic Millet

India, USA, and France hold EU Organic certification for millet, with dual EU Organic and USDA NOP certification available from USA and French suppliers. Indian organic millet is sourced primarily from Rajasthan and holds FSSAI certification in addition to EU Organic. USA organic millet from Colorado and South Dakota is sold as proso millet and holds USDA NOP certification.

Millet Private Label

Millet is packaged in retail pouches (250g, 500g, 1kg), jars, and sachets for gluten-free breakfast cereals, ancient grain blends, and snack bars. The MOQ for private label millet starts at 500-1000 units and depends on packaging format.
