Cashew Nut Grades & Forms

Cashews from Anacardium occidentale are graded after shell removal and kernel drying, with grade determined by kernel size and wholeness. The table below covers the main procurement grades used in food manufacturing and retail supply:

Whole grades (W-series) dominate retail and premium food manufacturing. Split and broken grades are preferred for applications where kernel appearance is secondary to cost and processing efficiency. Bulk Cashew Nuts

Moisture content and aflatoxin risk are the two critical quality variables when sourcing cashews in bulk. Whole kernel moisture should sit between 3% and 5%; above this limit the risk of mould and aflatoxin development in storage increases significantly. Request aflatoxin test results (maximum EU limit: 4 ppb total aflatoxin in ready-to-eat nuts under EU Regulation 2023/915) alongside full GFSI documentation before committing to a container order.

Standard packaging is 25 lb (11.34 kg) or 50 lb (22.68 kg) vacuum-sealed polythene bags, packed in cartons. Confirm whether vacuum-sealing is applied to whole grades if transit times exceed six weeks, as oxygen exposure accelerates rancidity.


Organic Cashew Nuts

EU Organic and USDA NOP certified cashews are available from suppliers in India, Vietnam, and Brazil. Organic volume is more limited in whole premium grades (W-180 to W-240) than in W-320 and processing grades; confirm grade availability before finalising volume commitments. Check that the certificate of analysis and organic transaction certificate cover the same harvest year you are procuring, as carryover stock from previous harvests may hold a different certification status.


Private Label Cashew Nuts

Common private label cashew formats include resealable retail bags from 100 g to 1 kg in whole, roasted, and flavoured variants, as well as foodservice packs and mixed nuts. For private label production, confirm grade at the outset: retail-grade W-240 and W-320 cashews carry a significant price premium over processing-grade splits and pieces, and the specification must be locked before production quotations are comparable across suppliers. Minimum order quantities for private label typically start at 500 kg to 1 MT depending on packaging format.


Cashew Nut Manufacturers

Vietnam is the world's largest cashew processing country, importing raw cashew nuts (RCN) from West Africa (primarily Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, and Tanzania) and re-exporting processed kernels globally. India combines significant domestic raw nut production with large-scale processing capacity, particularly in the states of Maharashtra and Goa. Brazil is the original cashew origin and remains a supplier of traceable, single-origin product, though export volumes are lower than Vietnam and India. Ivory Coast is the largest RCN producer, but exports primarily unprocessed nuts for finishing in Asia.
