In the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, on its way to the Atlantic, the Guadiana River, in its middle reaches in Extremadura, opens into a fertile valley. These are the "Vegas del Guadiana," where thousands of hectares are irrigated by the enormous reserves of pure, clean water stored in a vast system of dams that form a beautiful collection of inland lakes. These irrigated lands form a rich aquatic agroecosystem of enormous ecological interest, where more than 25,000 hectares of rice are cultivated. Five rice farmer cooperatives, which together produce more than 100,000 tons, have built a modern rice industry capable of processing and transforming most of their produce.
