Founded in 1993, Bio Foods is committed to promoting a sustainable, organic, and fair trade lifestyle. Originally a family-owned enterprise in Kandy, Sri Lanka, the company has evolved into a global leader in biodynamic, organic, and ethically sourced agriculture. With a strong belief in naturally grown, chemical-free produce, Bio Foods ensures that even its fertilizers are certified organic—helping to preserve clean air, water, and soil for current and future generations.

From the very beginning, Bio Foods prioritized fair trade principles to protect farmers from unstable market prices and exploitation by intermediaries. This dedication to ethical and sustainable agriculture earned its founder and chairman, Dr. Sarath Ranaweera, the prestigious title of the first-ever “World’s Fairest Fairtrader” in 2014, awarded by the World Fairtrade Labelling Organization (FLO).

While the company initially specialized in organic and fair trade teas, it quickly expanded to become the world’s first fair trade-certified processor and exporter of spices. Today, Bio Foods is preparing to launch a broader range of products under its own brand, a vision inspired by its chairman to benefit the local communities that cultivate their crops. These products include teas, spices, herbs, fruits, vegetables, coconut products, and whole grains—all rooted in their commitment to the #organicway, accessible to conscious consumers around the globe.

Bio Foods organizes its certified organic farmers into structured groups and handles everything from processing to packaging in its own facilities across Sri Lanka. This integrated approach enables the company to maintain transparency and take full accountability for the quality of its goods. They offer both bulk and retail packaging for export to countries in Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, and beyond—backed by a range of international certifications.

In recognition of its pioneering efforts, the company’s Marginalized Organic Producers Association (MOPA) was honored as the "Best Small Organic Farmer Group in Asia" by FLO in 2014. Bio Foods continues to set the benchmark for ethical, organic agriculture in Sri Lanka and beyond.
