What is Oats?

Oats are a highly versatile and nutrient-rich cereal grain that has been cultivated for thousands of years. Known for their mild, nutty flavor and heart-healthy qualities, oats are commonly processed into products such as oatmeal, rolled oats, and oat flour, making them a staple in breakfast and baking applications.

Types, Varieties & Forms of Oats

  • Whole Oat Groats: The least processed form, whole oat groats retain the bran and germ and are commonly used in hearty dishes.
  • Steel-Cut Oats: Made by chopping whole oats, offering a chewy texture and often used for making oatmeal.
  • Rolled Oats (Old-Fashioned Oats): Steamed and flattened, ideal for quick-cooking oatmeal, baking, and smoothies.
  • Instant Oats: The most processed form, pre-cooked and thinly rolled for fast preparation.
  • Oat Flour: Ground oats, often used in baking and as a thickener in recipes.
  • Oat Bran: The outer layer of the oat grain, high in fiber, commonly added to baked goods and health foods.
  • Puffed Oats: Oats that are puffed using heat and pressure, often used in breakfast cereals or snacks.
  • Oat Milk: A liquid made by blending oats with water, used as a dairy-free alternative in beverages and cooking.

Harvest Season of Oats

Oats are generally harvested in late summer to early fall (August to September). After harvest, oats are cleaned, hulled, and then processed into various forms for consumption.

Producing Countries

Oats are primarily grown in countries with temperate climates, including Russia, Canada, the United States, and several European nations, such as Finland, Poland, and the United Kingdom. Canada and Russia are the leading producers, with significant cultivation also occurring in the northern regions of the U.S.

According to Statistics Canada, oat production in Canada has experienced fluctuations in recent years. In 2022, total oat production increased due to higher yields, with farmers reporting more oats compared to 2021. However, in 2023, total oat production decreased by 49.6% nationally to 2.6 million tonnes, the lowest in over a decade, primarily due to a 41.3% reduction in harvested area. In 2024, projections indicated a 27.0% increase in oat production to 3.4 million tonnes, attributed to both increased harvested area and yields.

Oats are typically grown in rotation with other crops like barley or wheat, as they help improve soil quality. Due to their health benefits, oats are gaining popularity worldwide, especially in countries that are focusing on heart-healthy diets and gluten-free foods.

Trends & History

Oats have become increasingly popular in the health food market due to their high fiber content and potential heart-health benefits. With the rise of plant-based diets, oats are frequently used in non-dairy products, such as oat milk, further expanding their presence in wholesale markets.
