An Analysis of Food Imports in the USA

In the year 2015, we witnessed a sharp drop in the food exports from The USA and a moderate increase in Food imports from then. The drop in food exports was after a steady increase for the previous five years that is from the year 2010 to 2015. In the year 2015, the total exports amounted to $133 billion only, and the drop was attributed to a slower world economic growth and also the falling price of the bulk commodities.

On the other side, the imports continued to grow and in the year 2015, the US food import statistics that was registered went up by 2% as the population of the USA continues to face an increase and people becoming wealthier, more tropical products, spices, and gourmet products are being imported into the USA.  Overall, for the last decade, The US has experienced a 5%-10% increase in food imports each year. So what are some of the factors that are contributing to the increase in food imports in the US? Continue reading to find out.

Factors Leading to Increase in Food Imports in the USA
The factors believed to be driving higher food imports in the US include seasonal and climatic factors which have contributed to an increase in the importation of vegetables and fruits, while Cocoa and Coffee are the major tropical products being imported into the nation.

Another reason why the US food import statistics show increased importation is that of intra-industry trade which is allowing people to find more alternatives to feed their families and relatives. Also, the local industries have contributed to the increase in US food imports statists, and this is attributed to their practices during various stages of food processing. You will find that the US industries will mostly carry out offshore processing of agricultural products. Through importation of products that are at various levels of processing from the subsidiaries in other nations, this leads to an increase in the total food imports. The Government through the FDA can control food importation in the US, and this is through food import regulations.

Analysis of FDA Import Process
The FDA expects that all food imported into the USA meets the set standards. Note that this is not only for the imports but also the domestic products. Therefore those producing locally are also expected to comply.  The entry submission process begins with complying with the Customs and Border Protection. Therefore the importer must first meet the CBP regulations. Note that if you are using an agent at the customs, the only agent allowed is the customs broker licensed by CBP. At the CBP point, the imports will be given categorization which includes the Harmonized Tariff Schedule that shows if these are regulated products or not.

Food Import Regulations
FDA requires that food imported must be safe and not contain any prohibited substances/ingredients. Further, it is expected that you must meet all the labeling and packaging information as per the FDA regulations. The importers must also have FDA valid permits.
