The Different Types of Food Standards

Almost every week, we hear reports over the media on some scandal or scare stories related to food safety and handling. In fact, even restaurants and companies owned by well-renowned name in the industry oftentimes suffer from these types of concerns. One thing that has become clear is that after years of being exposed to the bad press regarding food safety, the topic has turned into something that is already taken quite seriously. For this reason, food standards have been set to serve as a guideline for different companies in the food industry.

What is a Standard?
A standard refers to a document that offers specifications, requirements, characteristics, or guidelines which can be consistently used to make sure that products, materials, services, and processes are fit for the purpose. These codes of practice and product standards help manufacturers to come up with commodities that actually meet the specifications for both safety and quality.

The process of standardization ensures product and service uniformity. It also ensures that there is an effective utilization of different resources by reducing wastes. These food standards are also documents that contain guidelines that can be consistently used to make sure that all food items are fit for consumption by humans. In any country, these food standards are set by the authorities, and strongly enforced by food companies, governments, and retailers.

Different Food standards
Here are some of the food standards that are established in the UK. For instance, food companies are required to comply with the Food Safety Act 1990. This amendment offers the framework for all of the food legislations in Britain. This guide is applicable for all food business types with the territories of England, Scotland, and Wales. There is also a similar legislation that works in Northern Ireland.

On the other hand, the EU Regulation No. 2073/2005 which is applicable on microbiological criteria on foods, as amended by the EU Regulation No. 1441/2007, complementing the legislation on food hygiene, thus applying to all types of food businesses that are involved in both the production, as well as the handling of different food items. Feed Hygiene Regulation 183/2005 is also a guide to help businesses producing animal fees to be approved or registered for any establishment, which includes a model application, registration, and approval with a detailed guide on the regulation. 

All of these food standards are very important because it safeguards consumer health. At the same time, it also ensures consumer confidence in the food systems, enabling the customers to make well-informed decisions when it comes to the food that they buy. These standards are also used in differentiating food products, and in communicating food safety and quality to consumers.
